Statistics show that one in five men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. Myth: Sexual assault is caused by the victims actions or by how they dress.

If women didnt make themselves attractive, men wouldn't rape. Reality: Sexual assault is not a spontaneous crime of sexual passion. It is a crime that involves power and control. The perpetrator usually chooses a victim for their vulnerability rather than their socially defined sexual attractiveness. Attractiveness is not a risk factor, but vulnerability is.

At greatest risk are those people who are at a power disadvantage with those around them, such as children and people with disabilities. This myth places the responsibility for the assault on the victim rather than the perpetrator. Myth: Women cannot commit rape or other sexual assault crimes. Reality: Although the vast majority of perpetrators are male, females can and do commit sexual assaults, usually against male or female children. The following information was provided by the Association for the Prevention of Family Violence, 461 E.

Geneva Elkhom. For more information, call (262) 723-4653 or e-mail APFVelknet.net. Victims of sexual assault often experience an overwhelming feeling of vulnerability, violation and powerlessness. Many blame themselves, reliving the experience to see how they could have changed the outcome. Sexual assault is never the victims fault.

There are many other myths surrounding rape and sexual assault. The following are several myths with regard to sexual assault. Myth: Sexual assault means rape or intercourse. Reality: Basically, sexual assault is when one person forces, manipulates or tricks another person into sexual contact. The term sexual assault is not just rape, nor does it necessarily involve intercourse.

It includes a variety of sex acts such as fondling, oral sex, anal sodomy, masochism, sadism and verbal or visual stimulation. Exposing also is sexual assault even though no direct touch is involved. Myth: Only maladjusted individuals with criminal records or persons with severe psychological problems commit sexual assaults. Reality: Contrary to popular belief, people who commit sexual assault come from all different socioeconomic classes, ethnicities and usually are not even recognized as criminals. Myth: Sexual assault is just a womens issue.
