Mr. F.

B. Moore Ie putting a Round O.k furnace Into the H. C. Lyltou rest deuce. Ity bv the unroimtiiutioiiHl action of the Speaker.

The whole affair aroused not only the legislature, but also the stale to the daring and the unscrnpiilousnese of the forces which beset every attempt to remedy the abuses of power wielded by the corporations. While the measure stands a good chance of becoming law now that the people are aroused, it may yet be defeated by veto of the governor after the legislature arijouVns. Wisconsin has uever allowed any such high handed defiauce of legislative rights as have disgraced the sucker state. This perhaps because the corporations have been able to have their own way without any break in the usual routine of legislative proceedure. But Wisconsin as well as Illiuols has shown a pllableuess to corporation luflueuces, that is giving it the lead even over Illinois in the race for the honor of being the corporation state of the west.

Iu the legislative. history just being concluded at Madison, notwithstanding the large Republican majority In both branches of the legislature, the railroads have succeeded in gettiug adverse action to every leadiog pledge of the party platform. Primary elections, equal taxation of the railroads aud a rate commission are all killed In oue or both houses aud the people of the state practically notified that no legislation need be expected that the railroads do not approve. How the peoples expressed will can thus be so easily set aside and over-ruled, Is a question often asked, but in the absence of direct proof can only be Imagined. Whatever they are they lead legislatures to sacrifice their honor, their word and the pledgee they make In accepting the platform on which they are elected.

One reealt, however, is the certain outcome of these revelations of corporation power In our politics. It reveals the necessity of earnest and united effort on the part of all citizens, it they are to eecnre relief from the exactions and extortions of corporations who continue to enjoy an unrestrained levy of the people by maulpulntad legislators.
